The Greenman and Courtyard

This was our first visit to the Greenman and I can honestly say that it will not be our last. Set high up in the Ongar countryside on School Road is where you’ll find the Greenman. The front of the pub is designed in a U shaped with a courtyard in the middle. Then at the back there is a conservatory used as a dining area plus an outside terrace. Beyond the car park there is a children’s play area as well additional seating. We arrived on Sunday and as we entered received a very friendly welcome from all members of staff which continued throughout our lunch. As you enter the bar is in front of you with part of the restaurant to the right and left as you pass the end of the bar area. To the left is another dining area as well as a function room. We started with a drink at the bar and a chat with a couple of the staff who told us how the owners Lamty & Bethany took over the pub a couple of years ago and had the place completely refurbished. We were then taken through to be seated at our table in the restaurant. Once seated we were given the menu which had a great selection consisting of eight starters , five sunday roasts , four fish dishes , two vegetarian and a fabulous selection of desserts.

STARTERS

We started with Grilled Goats Cheese Tart with Caramelised Onion & Rocket Salad which was not only a generous serving but very tasty indeed. We also chose the Mediterranean Prawns in Garlic Butter which where nicely cooked and presented.

MAINS

It was now time for our Sunday Roasts and cracking they were to. They really are a hearty size with an abundance of vegetables along with roast potatoes , yorkshire pudding and stuffing. We chose the Roast Beef and the Pork Belly which is also served with a large helping of gravy so no need to ask for more here.

DESSERTS

After a well earned rest it was time for desserts and these were a good size portion to. We ordered the Bread & Butter Pudding a big favourite of mine and which I have to say was absolutely delicious and will take some beating. We also chose the Apple & Blackberry Crumble which was also an absolute delight.

We finished with a coffee to bring to an end a great Sunday Lunch. I’d like to thank Chef Lamty for the fabulous food and Bethany and her staff for the great friendly service. I would definitely recommend a visit to the Greenman and I for one will definitely be back again soon.
