My Foodie Week in Madeira

Just back from a fabulous weeks stay in Madeira where I enjoyed a fantastic Foodie experience. Whenever I’m on holiday I will always try to find restaurants that serve not only great local cuisine but are also popular with the locals themselves. On this occasion I was lucky enough to find three amazing restaurants that served excellent Portuguese food that was so good we visited each one on two occasions. We were also lucky as these restaurants were just a short walk from the Pestana Promenade Hotel where I was staying.

Restaurante Petiscos

This is a restaurant that serves the finest Portuguese food along with a good selection of local & portuguese wines. This is also matched by great friendly service as they make you feel at home straight away. They also have a fabulous on site wine shop where they sell the very best of Madeira wines & spirits. On both of our visits we enjoyed tasting some of the finest food Madeira had to offer with dishes like the Rabbit , Octopus , Shrimp , Scabbard Fish , Mussels , Grilled Meats & Mackerel. This place has a long and established reputation and it’s not hard to why.

Madmarket

This was quite a trendy restaurant set on the first floor of a small shopping centre. Please don’t let this put you off as it is well worth a visit. In fact the restaurant on both our visits was really busy so if there are more than two of you I would recommend booking a table. The restaurant actually reminded me of a place in Skiathos called Ergon with it’s own on site grocery & wine shop. Run efficiently by a young and friendly team they offer a great choice of Cheese & Meat Boards , Sandwiches , Fish , Shellfish & Meat dishes using the best local produce.

Marisqueira Splendida

I have to say if there’s a better fish restaurant in Madeira I’d like to know where it is. This restaurant has only been open for a couple of months but if our two amazing visits are anything to go by then I can only see this place receiving numerous accolades. The quality of the Fish & Shellfish was excellent which was enhanced by the fabulous flavour combinations. The friendliness of the staff also adds to the pleasure of visiting here. If your a fish lover then this is definitely a place I would highly recommend.

These are definitely three restaurants I would recommend if your ever in Madeira especially if your in the Sao Martinho area of the island. I for one will definitely be making a return to all three when I’m next in Madeira.
