The Black Horse

On Sunday we was out for a little tour of Essex & visiting a couple of towns on the way. Once we were ready we then decided to look for somewhere to eat as we headed back home. As we got near to Brentwood I said to my wife that we could try the Black Horse on the Ongar Road a place that we hadn’t been to for quite a few years and that I’d heard that only a few weeks ago had undergone a refurbishment. We pulled into the car park which was very busy well it was a popular time of the day so we thought our chances of getting a table were slim. But to our delight they said if we could just give them ten minutes they would clean and get a table ready for us which we thought was great. While waiting we got a drink at the bar and started to look around. The refurb looked good as they still had a bar area for drinks as you entered. Then as you looked around you could see that it was split into sections which is also ideal for larger groups. Well they were true to their word and only five minutes had passed when we were shown to our table. We already had a drink so were given a few moments to look at the menu which certainly had a good selection ie starters , mains , roasts , steaks , burgers and of course desserts. We decided to start with the Breaded Whitebait with a Marie Rose sauce and the Chargrilled Sticky Ribs with a Mango & Pineapple salsa both dishes were nicely cooked and a great way to start.

We then moved on to our mains and to my wife’s delight they still had the Hunters Chicken on the menu a dish she used to love years ago. She was also pleased that it tasted as good as she remembered. I think the fact the chicken comes topped with cheese & bacon makes it a winner. I went for the Roast Trio with a mix of Beef , Pork Belly & Turkey and have to say this was a very good roast dinner.

It was then time for dessert to which I couldn’t resist and chose a good pub favourite the Sticky Toffee Pudding and this one is certainly wasn’t a disappointment and a dessert I would recommend

This ended a delightful lunch and will definitely return soon as we enjoyed great food and also received good service from our waitress Alex who was pleasant and polite throughout. Although we managed to be seated this time to which we were very grateful I would definitely recommend booking or at least give them a call first as it’s very popular and now after our visit you can see why as you enjoy good pub food with a nice friendly atmosphere.
