Fattoria di Fibbiano

On our recent visit to Viareggio we had the chance to meet up with my good friends Laura & Katarina who had arranged to take us to this winery in Terricciola. We made our way to Pontedera to meet them before a 25 minute drive south to the winery. As you enter and make your up the views are already stunning and these are enhanced when you reach the top. After a brief look around at this amazing scenery it was then time to meet Dalila who was our host for the day. We started with a tour of the vineyard where you got to see the different types of grapes plus we were told about all the hard work that goes into the start process of wine making. We were also lucky to see the destemming machine in action as the trucks full of grapes arrived back from the morning’s picking.

It was then time for us to see the next stage of the wine making process. Dalila showed us around the winery giving an excellent detailed explanation of each stage and what each bit of machinery did. It was very interesting to hear that some of their wine can take up to two years to go from grape to bottle. We also saw the different sized casks which are also made from different types of wood all depending on wine and grapes. The tour of the winery ended with the very modern label maker.

THE WINE MAKING PROCESS

Now it was time for lunch and wine tasting in the New Wine Bar. As it was such a beautiful day we decided to sit outside on the fabulous terrace and enjoy the stunning views of the countryside. The food was amazing as we had some delicious bread , meats , cheese & caprese salad accompanied with their amazing homemade Olive Oil.

MEATS , CAPRESE SALAD & OLIVE OIL

While we were all enjoying this delicious food it was time to taste some of the fabulous wine. We started with a delightful 1) Fonte Della Donne white wine with aromas of apple & tropical fruit before enjoying a fantastic selection of Red wines. 2) Le Pianette IGT with spicy aromas. 3) Casalini Chianti Superior DOCG with cherry , raspberry & blackberry flavours. 4) Ciliegiolo IGT also with cherry , blackberry & raspberry aromas. 5) L’Aspetto IGT that has a lovely full bodied finish 6) Finally the stunning Ceppatella IGT with ripe fruit and hints of tobacco. This wine is very smooth and a long aromatic taste. These selection of wines were absolutely fabulous and definitely some of the finest I’ve ever tasted from Italy.

This rounded of a truly fantastic afternoon at Fattoria di Fibbiano to which now with the newly added Wine Bar makes a visit here even more worth while. This is an excellent family run winery and they all make you feel so very welcome. I would like to Thank Dalila for being a fantastic host and to other members of the family who while even though they were working made time to say hello and have a chat. I would also like to thank my two great friends Laura & Katarina for bringing us here and it will certainly be a day we won’t forget.
